COLUMBUS (WCMH)–Urban Meyer has built an Ohio State coaching staff with significant credentials, including former NFL and college head coaches. He’s adding another to the family.
An Ohio State spokesperson confirmed Wednesday night that Joker Phillips will join the football staff at OSU in a “quality control” capacity. The news was first reported Wednesday by Kentucky Sports Radio and several other media outlets in Kentucky.
Phillips played football at Kentucky and later served for 3 years as the head coach of the Wildcats from 2010-2012. He went on to work as an assistant at Florida and this past season he served as the receivers coach for the Cleveland Browns.
It’s unclear what Phillips’ exact duties at OSU will be. A quality control assistant cannot serve as an on-field coach (per NCAA rules), but typically they assist the on-field coaching staff with self-analysis, scouting future opponents or even analysis of recruits.
