COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)–The Ohio State University has filed to trademark the name “Woody Hayes” for commercial licensing purposes, Columbus Business First reports.
Hayes’ family gave the school permission to make the agreement. The legendary Buckeyes football coach has been featured on numerous hats, t-shirts, and bobbleheads without an official U.S. Patent and Trademark Office registration.

Current coach Urban Meyer’s name has already been trademarked.
Federal trademark registration grants the university more power to combat copyright infringement.
Ohio State earns 12 percent royalties on sales of Buckeyes-related merchandise, BizFirst reports. For Hayes’ family, there’s an extra 4 percent bonus royalty on sales of memorabilia with his name, directed to the Anne Hayes Memorial Scholarship.
